2-in-1 vs 3-in-1 Portable Coffee Maker: Which One Fits Your Brand?

CM1001B-PRO 2-in-1 and CM1001B-PLUS 3-in-1 portable coffee makers

A 2-in-1 portable coffee maker normally works with Nespresso® Original-style capsules and ground coffee. A 3-in-1 portable coffee maker adds a separate holder for Dolce Gusto®-style capsules.

That sounds like a small difference, but it affects the product size, ground-coffee capacity, packaging and target market.

We use our CM1001B-PRO and CM1001B-PLUS below to explain the practical differences.

Quick Answer

Choose a 2-in-1 portable coffee maker if your customers mainly use Nespresso® Original-style capsules and ground coffee, and you want a lighter product with more compact packaging.

Choose a 3-in-1 portable coffee maker if you also need Dolce Gusto®-style capsule compatibility and want a larger ground-coffee basket.

What Is a 2-in-1 Portable Coffee Maker?

A 2-in-1 model supports two coffee formats:

  • Nespresso® Original-style capsules;
  • Ground coffee.

Our CM1001B-PRO portable coffee maker uses this setup.

It is the more straightforward option if Dolce Gusto® capsules are not common in your target market. The machine is also lighter, the gift box is smaller, and more units can be packed in each export carton.

For e-commerce sellers, promotional projects and brands that mainly sell Nespresso-compatible capsules, this simpler setup is often enough.

What Is a 3-in-1 Portable Coffee Maker?

A 3-in-1 model supports:

  • Nespresso® Original-style capsules;
  • Dolce Gusto®-style capsules;
  • Ground coffee.

The CM1001B-PLUS portable coffee maker includes a separate holder for each coffee format.

We normally recommend the PLUS when a buyer sells in several countries or is not sure which capsule system will be more popular. Offering three brewing options gives the end user more flexibility.

The trade-off is easy to understand: the machine and packaging are slightly larger, and the product costs more than the simpler PRO version.

15 g or 7 g Ground Coffee?

This is the other important difference.

The CM1001B-PRO holds approximately 7 g of ground coffee. It is suitable for a smaller serving and keeps the machine compact.

The CM1001B-PLUS uses a 51 mm basket that holds approximately 15 g, depending on the grind size and filling method. It is better suited to users who want a larger coffee dose or prefer using freshly ground beans.

The larger basket does not automatically guarantee better coffee. Grind size, coffee dose and preparation still affect the result. However, it gives the user more room to adjust the recipe.

Are the Heating and Battery Systems Different?

The main electrical specifications are similar.

Both models use:

  • A 12 V / 100 W heating system;
  • A 10.8 V / 2,600 mAh / 28.08 Wh battery;
  • USB-C 5 V / 2 A charging;
  • A pump rated at up to 20 bar;
  • Cold-water heating;
  • Hot-water direct extraction.

With 50 ml of cold water, making one coffee normally takes around 4–6 minutes. The actual time depends on the starting water temperature, ambient temperature and battery condition.

When heating cold water, both models normally make around 3–5 cups per full charge. Using prepared hot water consumes much less battery power.

Size and Packing Matter for Wholesale Orders

The CM1001B-PRO is about 10 mm shorter and approximately 250 g lighter than the CM1001B-PLUS.

The PRO is packed 15 units per export carton, while the PLUS is packed 8 units per carton.

This can make a noticeable difference when calculating:

  • Shipping costs;
  • Warehouse space;
  • E-commerce fulfilment fees;
  • Retail shelf space;
  • Container loading quantities.

The PLUS takes up more space because it includes the larger 51 mm ground-coffee system and the additional Dolce Gusto®-style holder.

Which Model Should You Choose?

Choose the CM1001B-PRO 2-in-1 if:

  • Your market mainly uses Nespresso® Original-style capsules;
  • A 7 g ground-coffee basket is sufficient;
  • You want a lighter and more compact machine;
  • Shipping and packing efficiency are important;
  • You are building a simpler entry-level product line.

Choose the CM1001B-PLUS 3-in-1 if:

  • You need Nespresso®, Dolce Gusto® and ground-coffee compatibility;
  • You want a 51 mm basket with an approximately 15 g capacity;
  • Your product will be sold in several markets;
  • Brewing flexibility is more important than minimum size and weight;
  • You want one model to cover more customer preferences.

Neither model is better for every project. The right choice depends on the capsule formats used in your market, the required coffee dose and your target selling price.

Available options include:
