A portable Nespresso coffee maker should do more than hold a capsule.
The capsule needs to fit correctly, lock into position, puncture cleanly and remain sealed during extraction. After brewing, it should also come out without tearing or becoming stuck inside the holder.
I’m Yong Xiong, an engineer at Ningbo Tongxin Technology Co., Ltd. I have worked in small-appliance development for 20 years, including 10 years in coffee machine development. Here is how we check Nespresso® Original-style capsule compatibility on our portable coffee makers.
Quick Answer
We check eight points when testing a portable Nespresso coffee maker:
- Capsule size and construction;
- Capsule insertion;
- Holder locking;
- Inlet puncture position;
- Outlet foil opening;
- Sealing and leakage;
- Coffee flow and extraction;
- Used-capsule removal.
A capsule can fit into the holder and still fail during extraction. That is why we test the complete brewing process rather than checking the capsule size alone.
Which Nespresso Capsules Do Our Machines Support?
The CM1001B-PLUS and CM1001B-PRO are designed for Nespresso Original-style capsules.
They are not designed for Nespresso Vertuo capsules. Vertuo capsules have a different shape, size and brewing system.
Third-party Original-style capsules can also vary in rim thickness, foil strength and body material. When a buyer plans to sell the machine with a specific local capsule brand, we recommend testing that exact capsule before mass production.
Our Capsule Compatibility Test
| Test | What we check | Common problem |
|---|---|---|
| Capsule fit | The capsule sits in the holder without forcing | Capsule is too tight or sits at an angle |
| Holder locking | The holder closes completely | Excessive resistance or incomplete locking |
| Inlet puncture | The capsule is punctured in the correct position | Off-centre or incomplete puncture |
| Outlet opening | Water pressure opens the foil correctly | Weak flow or uneven opening |
| Sealing | Water passes through the capsule without leaking around it | Water bypasses the capsule |
| Extraction | Coffee flow is stable | Spraying, stalling or irregular flow |
| Capsule removal | The used capsule comes out normally | Capsule sticks or tears |
| Repeat brewing | Results remain consistent over several extractions | Fit or flow changes after repeated use |
1. Checking the Capsule Fit
We first place the capsule into the holder by hand.
It should sit naturally in the correct position. If we need to press it into place, the fit is already too tight. If the capsule moves around too much, it may tilt when the holder is installed.
We also check whether the capsule holder can be tightened normally. Forcing the holder closed may crush the capsule rim, damage the foil or create a poor seal.
2. Inspecting the Puncture
After extraction, we remove the capsule and inspect both ends.
The inlet side should have a clean puncture in the intended area. On the outlet side, the foil should open evenly enough for coffee to flow through.
An off-centre puncture may mean the capsule moved inside the holder. If the foil barely opens, the coffee may flow too slowly. If it tears too aggressively, coffee grounds may enter the cup.
This used-capsule inspection is simple, but it tells us a lot about how the holder and puncture system are working together.
3. Checking the Seal and Water Flow
During brewing, we watch the joint between the machine and capsule holder.
Water should pass through the capsule instead of leaking around its rim. We check for visible leaks, unexpected spraying and water bypassing the coffee.
A capsule may look compatible when the machine is dry but leak once the pump starts. That is why our compatibility check always includes a real extraction test.
4. Looking at the Coffee in the Cup
We do not judge compatibility from the capsule holder alone. We also look at the result in the cup.
We check:
- How quickly the coffee begins to flow;
- Whether the flow is stable;
- Whether the machine stalls during extraction;
- The amount of coffee produced;
- Crema appearance;
- Consistency across several cups.
Capsule construction and coffee filling can affect the final result, so we compare repeated extractions rather than relying on a single cup.
5. Removing the Used Capsule
After brewing, the capsule should come out of the holder without excessive force.
We check whether the capsule sticks, collapses or tears during removal. A small amount of water remaining around a used capsule can occur, but the capsule should still be easy to remove.
This point is often overlooked during sample evaluation. For the end user, however, removing and cleaning the capsule holder is part of everyday use.
Why We Ask Buyers to Send Capsule Samples
“Nespresso Original compatible” covers many capsule manufacturers. Their products may have slightly different dimensions, materials and foil strength.
We cannot assume that every third-party capsule sold in every country will behave in exactly the same way.
If you plan to bundle a particular capsule brand with the coffee maker, send us several samples. We can test the actual capsules before confirming the order. This is more reliable than checking only a product drawing or capsule diameter.
CM1001B-PLUS and CM1001B-PRO Compatibility
Both models support Nespresso Original-style capsules, but their other brewing options are different.
| Model | Nespresso Original-style | Dolce Gusto-style | Ground coffee |
|---|---|---|---|
| CM1001B-PRO | Yes | No | Approximately 7 g |
| CM1001B-PLUS | Yes | Yes | 51 mm basket, approximately 15 g |
Choose the CM1001B-PRO 2-in-1 portable coffee maker if you mainly need Nespresso Original-style capsules and a smaller ground-coffee basket.
Choose the CM1001B-PLUS portable coffee maker if you also need Dolce Gusto-style capsules and a larger 51 mm ground-coffee basket.

What Buyers Should Confirm Before Ordering
Before placing an OEM order, confirm:
- The capsule system used in your target market;
- Whether you need Original-style or Vertuo capsules;
- The third-party capsule brands you plan to support;
- Whether capsule samples can be tested;
- Whether the test includes real coffee extraction;
- Whether leakage and capsule removal are checked;
- Which capsule adapters are included in the package.
Our coffee machine quality control process explains the other inspections completed during production and before shipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the CM1001B-PLUS work with Nespresso Vertuo capsules?
No. The CM1001B-PLUS is designed for Nespresso Original-style capsules. Vertuo capsules use a different size and brewing system.
Does Nespresso compatibility include every third-party capsule?
Not automatically. Many third-party capsules follow the Original-style format, but differences in materials, dimensions and foil strength can affect fitting and extraction. We recommend testing the exact capsule brand you plan to sell or bundle.
Can we send our local capsules to your factory for testing?
Yes. Sending the actual capsules is the most reliable way to confirm compatibility before mass production.
Why does a capsule leak during extraction?
Possible causes include an incorrect capsule size, a damaged rim, poor positioning, an unsuitable foil structure or an incomplete seal between the capsule and holder.
Which model should I choose for capsule coffee?
Choose the CM1001B-PRO if you need Nespresso Original-style capsules and ground coffee. Choose the CM1001B-PLUS if you also need Dolce Gusto-style capsules and a larger 15 g ground-coffee basket.
