Portable Coffee Maker for Camping: Coffee Without a Kettle

CM1001B-PLUS portable coffee maker for camping beside a mountain lake

Making coffee outdoors sounds easy until you count the gear: a stove, fuel, kettle, brewer, filters and coffee.

A portable coffee maker for camping with a built-in heating system simplifies the setup. Add cold water, insert a capsule or ground coffee, and start brewing. There is no need to boil water separately.

Quick Answer

The CM1001B-PLUS is a battery-powered, self-heating portable coffee maker. It can heat approximately 50 ml of water from around 20°C and extract coffee in about 4–5 minutes.

A full charge normally supports 3–5 cold-water heating cycles. It works with Nespresso® Original-style capsules, Dolce Gusto®-style capsules and ground coffee.

What Usually Makes Outdoor Coffee Difficult?

Limited packing spaceCoffee maker, heater and pump in one unit
Different coffee preferencesSupports two capsule formats and ground coffee

The Main Problem Is Usually Hot Water

Most manual camping coffee makers are small, but they still need hot water. That means carrying a kettle and finding a way to boil water.

This is the part people often miss when comparing portable coffee makers.

The CM1001B-PLUS uses a 12 V/100 W thick-film heating system. In our factory tests, heating and extracting approximately 50 ml of water from a starting temperature of around 20°C normally takes 4–5 minutes.

Outdoor temperature matters. If the water has been sitting in a cold car overnight, heating will take longer and use more battery power. For better results, keep the machine and drinking water inside the vehicle or tent before use.

How Many Cups Can It Make?

The CM1001B-PLUS uses a 10.8 V, 2,600 mAh battery pack with a rated energy of 28.08 Wh.

In normal conditions, one full charge can make approximately 3–5 cups when starting with cold water. The exact number depends on:

  • Starting water temperature;
  • Outdoor temperature;
  • Water volume;
  • Battery condition;
  • Time between extractions.

Three to five heated cups are usually enough for one person or a couple on a short trip. For a large camping group, a kettle and larger manual brewer will still be more practical.

If hot water is already available, the machine can perform approximately 300–500 extractions because the battery only needs to operate the pump and control system.

Capsules or Ground Coffee?

Capsules are convenient outdoors because they are pre-dosed and create less mess. Ground coffee gives you more choice and is useful when your preferred capsules are not available.

The CM1001B-PLUS supports:

  • Nespresso® Original-style capsules;
  • Dolce Gusto®-style capsules;
  • Ground coffee using a 51 mm SUS304 pressurized basket;
  • Approximately 15 g of ground coffee per basket.

This 3-in-1 setup is useful for road trips and longer journeys. You do not have to depend on one capsule system.

For a more detailed comparison, see our 2-in-1 vs 3-in-1 portable coffee maker guide.

Where Does This Setup Work Best?

A self-heating portable coffee maker is especially useful for:

  • Car camping;
  • RV and campervan travel;
  • Road trips;
  • Fishing;
  • Outdoor worksites;
  • Hotel rooms without a coffee machine;
  • Short solo or two-person trips.

It is less suitable for ultralight backpacking, where every gram matters. Instant coffee or a lightweight manual brewer may be a better option in that situation.

What Should You Pack?

For a short trip, the basic setup is simple:

  • Fully charged coffee maker;
  • The capsule holder or coffee basket you plan to use;
  • Capsules or ground coffee;
  • Clean drinking water;
  • A small cloth and some rinse water;
  • USB charging cable.

The optional carrying bag holds the main unit, one coffee holder, the measuring spoon and charging cable.

The battery can be recharged through a suitable 5 V/2 A USB power source. We recommend charging it fully before leaving rather than depending on charging during the trip.

Cleaning the Coffee Maker at Camp

Cleaning is easier if it is done immediately after brewing.

Remove the used capsule or coffee basket, discard the coffee waste and rinse the holder with clean water. Empty any remaining water and allow the parts to dry before packing them away.

Do not leave used coffee inside the holder for several hours. Coffee oils and fine grounds become harder to remove once they dry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a portable coffee maker for camping need a kettle?

A self-heating model does not. The CM1001B-PLUS can heat cold water inside the machine before extraction.

How long does it take to make coffee from cold water?

In our tests, approximately 50 ml of water starting at around 20°C takes about 4–5 minutes to heat and extract. Colder water will take longer.

How many heated cups can it make per charge?

A fully charged CM1001B-PLUS normally makes approximately 3–5 heated cups, depending on water temperature and operating conditions.

Can it use both capsules and ground coffee?

Yes. It supports Nespresso® Original-style capsules, Dolce Gusto®-style capsules and ground coffee.

Is it suitable for backpacking?

It can be carried in a backpack, but it is better suited to car camping, RV travel and road trips. Ultralight hikers may prefer a simpler manual brewer.

Can it make coffee for a large group?

It is designed as a single-serve coffee maker. For several people drinking coffee at the same time, a large kettle and manual brewer may be faster.
